This typical Admiral's tender, used in and among the warships of the Dutch Navy, is sloop-rigged, with leeboards. Like most vessels of the era.

This typical Admiral's tender, used in and among the warships of the Dutch Navy, is sloop-rigged, with leeboards.   Several factors incited the Dutch at the end of the 15th. century to develop small, shallow-draught, fast, seaworthy and easily manoeuvrable, close-to-the-wind sailing ships: the abundance of shallow waters around the coast and the possession of a big fleet of deep-draught merchantmen which often had to anchor far from the coast; the need for messengers between the ships of a fleet, and scouting tasks.  They were built as improvements of existing fishing boats and inland waterway-vessels, with side-boards and rigged fore-and-aft: one mast with a quadrangle spritsail as main, and a triangular staysail in front, often supplemented with a jib rigged to the removable jib-boom. They were called yaghts, the Dutch word for "fast running". In the picture you see the model of the yaght built for a Dutch prince; later one was built as a present to the English king, who went racing with it; thence the English word "yachting" for the sport.

The Royal Netherlands Navy (Dutch: Koninklijke Marine, "Royal Navy") is the navy of the Netherlands. Its origins date back to the Eighty Year's War(1568–1648) and the war of independence from the House of Habsburg who ruled over the so-called Habsburg Netherlands.
During the 17th century the navy of the Dutch Republic (1581–1795) was one of the most powerful naval forces in the world and played an active role in wars against England, France, Spain and several other European powers. The navy of the later Batavian Republic (1795–1806) and Kingdom of Holland(1806–1810) played an active role in the Napoleonic Wars, though mostly dominated by French interests. After the establishment of the modern Kingdom of the Netherlands (founded 1815) it served an important role in protecting Dutch colonial rule, especially in Southeast Asia, and would play a minor role inWorld War II, especially against the Japanese Imperial Navy.

After World War II, the Royal Netherlands Navy has taken part in expeditionary peacekeeping operations.
